Knockdow House

Knockdow House

Take the chance to live like a laird! Knockdow House offers luxury self-catering apartments in a grand country house, set in beautiful grounds and with the fantastic scenery of the Cowal Peninsula as a backdrop. The loch is only 200 yards from the front gates.

Knockdow House is the imposing former home to Clan Lamont and has delightful accommodation packed full of period features, all finished to an exceptional standard. Since the four apartments can be rented together and public rooms are available, it’s also the perfect place for hosting an exclusive wedding or family gathering.

300 year old

Following a significant restoration project, the owners of Knockdow House have transformed this 300-hundred-year-old country house, while preserving its considerable architectural and historical charm and rejuvenating the stunning gardens.

Four Luxury 5 Star Apartments

There are four luxury apartments within the main house (Cumbrae, Bute, Tower and School House). We stayed in Cumbrae in the East wing and thoroughly enjoyed the delights of country-house living.

This is a suite of generous size with two large bedrooms, and fantastic views over the main lawn and gardens beyond. Stylish and upmarket interiors, including period furniture, antiques and original artwork, make this somewhere really special to stay.

The grand sitting room with dining table also has stunning views over the large gardens and a small but well-equipped kitchen with dishwasher, washing machine, oven/microwave, hob, and coffee machine. There is also free WiFi throughout. The owners provide a superb welcome pack with amazing home-baked shortbread, cakes, milk, bottled water and wine!

This is no drafty old country pile; a state-of-the-art biomass central heating system ensures a warm and comfortable stay with endless hot water for relaxing baths after a day out walking, cycling or exploring the coast.

The main bedroom is huge, with additional seating area, and boasts a really comfy superking bed and a luxurious ensuite bathroom, featuring an original but fully restored cast-iron roll-top tub and separate shower. There is another bedroom off the main lounge area (superking bed or twin configuration) with a separate bathroom, again complete with roll-top bath.

The friendly owners are passionate about the house and its restoration, and have gone to great lengths to ensure their guests have a very special experience.

When renting all four suites for a family gathering, group holiday, corporate event or wedding, Knockdow House is can accommodate 22 overnight guests in style and up to 120 guests for ceremonies. There is a huge lawn area, which is ideal for a marquees. This grand, historic country house with its splendid public rooms but homely atmosphere, and delightful gardens, makes the perfect wedding venue, and the owners can put you in touch with local florists and caterers.

The School House, on the ground floor, is adapted for visitors with additional needs. The owners suggest that you get in touch to discuss whether the accommodation is suitable for your needs.

Argyll’s ‘Secret Coast’

Hidden away on the Cowal Peninsula, amongst lochs and mountains, and on Argyll’s ‘Secret Coast’ it’s hard to believe you are just over an hour way from Glasgow. Knockdow’s apartments are exceptional and just the place to come to relax and indulge yourself.

Perfect Days

Knockdow is a great base for exploring the delights of Dunoon and Cowal. Take a trip to the amazing Benmore Botanical Gardens, Argyll’s acclaimed mountainside garden, famous for its giant redwoods, Victorian fernery and collection of over 300 rhododendrons.

Cycle the quiet, often single-track, roads and take in the wonderful scenery. Ask the owners for a map and some tips on where to go.

Chill out in the extensive gardens, enjoy a picnic next to the stunning ponds.

Feeling adventurous? Head over to Quadmania activity centre for quadbike trekking, clay target shooting or archery

Head for the coast. Go for one of the many local coastal walks, and do a spot of wildlife watching – don’t forget your binoculars. Ask the owners for the advice on the best routes.

Go for a drive to explore the Cowal Peninisula and enjoy lunch in Tighnabruaich. This was a popular holiday resort back in the day when up to 20 steamships would bring holidaymakers from Glasgow to enjoy the scenery.
