These contemporary and stylish Golden Oak cabins, operated by Forest Holidays, are some of the best we have stayed in. With lochside views and superb facilities, they are the perfect place to unwind. A huge bonus is that, unusually for such high spec cabins, dogs are welcome in some designated pet-friendly cabins.
Loch Long at Ardgartan
Located on the shores of Loch Long at Ardgartan, this is picture-postcard stuff, surrounded by steep, pine-clad mountains and narrow fiord-type lochs.
The site is overlooked by the iconic Cobbler, one of Scotland’s finest mountains. I stayed close to this site many years ago at the (now demolished) Argartan Youth Hostel and the area holds fond memories.
However my stay this time was in 5-star luxury, with the highlight being the private outdoor hot tub, perfect for relaxing after a lochside or mountain walk.
Golden Oak Cabins
The Golden Oak cabins are stylish with good sized open-plan living area and contemporary well equipped kitchen & dining area. There is a feature solid wood dining table, perfect for a big family cook-up. The cabins also boast a state-of-the-art entertainment system (extra charge for films) wifi and large bedrooms, including one en-suite (complete with fluffy bathrobes & slippers). The bathrooms are top quality, with the shower particularly welcome after a day hillwalking or cycling.
The décor and fittings throughout are luxurious and the comfy sofa and wood- burning stove mean the lounge is ideal for relaxing and watching a film or even some Sky Sports on a wet day! Underfloor heating throughout ensures you stay cosy whatever the weather.
One of the highlights is the decking area in front of the lounge with the fabulous hot tub. Perfect for a BBQ or a glass of something chilled. Even if the weather is unkind, relaxing in a hot tub in the rain or snow can be a very satisfying experience!
40 Cabins to choose from
There are 40 Cabins on the site – although this sounds a lot, they are cleverly placed so you don’t feel too close to your neighbours and, as the site is family friendly, it’s pretty quiet after dark. Another big bonus is that the area is very accessible, around an hour from Glasgow and great base for day trips up the West Coast to Inveraray and Oban.
Concierge Team
The concierge team at the on-site Forest Retreat are really friendly and helpful. First class customer care seems to be the norm and we loved being able to order freshly baked bread and pastries for breakfast. Pizza is also available to order.
There is a well-stocked shop full of goodies, including local beers, home-cooked frozen ready meals and a small café. The staff are on hand to offer advice and tips on local walks and bike rides.
You can also arrange bike hire and select from a range of activities such as archery canoeing and fishing, as well as in-cabin spa treatments.
Set in the shadow of the Arrochar Alps, this is fantastic walking country, ranging from lochside rambles and forest walks from the door, to high level hillwalking, serious Munro bagging and even climbing. There are plenty of good forest trails for cyclists and mountain bikers too.
The Golden Oak Cabins are superb and offer a luxurious lochside break set amongst outstanding mountain scenery.
Perfect Days
Enjoy a day’s hillwalking in the Arrochar Alps. Favourites of ours include the Cobbler (884m), arguably one of Scotland’s finest mountains. If you are daring enough, go through the eye of the needle to the true summit! Or how about an ascent of Ben Ime the highest Munro in the area (1011m), with breath-taking views down Glen Croe
Take a drive along the stunning ‘Rest and be Thankful’ pass to the small seaside town of Inveraray. Explore the impressive castle, gardens and historic Jail.
Enjoy a seafood lunch at the original Loch Fyne restaurant. Why not blow the budget on one of their legendary seafood platters? They also offer a well-stocked shop if you prefer to take something back to the cabin.
Just chill out in the hot tub or relax with a soothing massage, or other luxury spa treatment, in the comfort of your own cabin
Hire bikes and explore the wealth of forest trails nearby. Maps and advice are available from the retreat office on site.
Try Archery or take the kids on guided nature walk from the site. The rangers are great and there is a fantastic array of local wildlife on the woods and along the shoreline.
Go for cruise on Loch Lomond. Nearby Tarbet offers a range of cruises on arguably Scotland’s most beautiful loch.
Explore the west coast, stopping at Ardkinglas Woodland Gardens and onto the west coast capital of Oban. Fantastic seafood, shopping and distillery tours are all on offer.
