Magnificent Victorian house with sea views
Craigbittern House is a magnificent Scots Baronial-style Victorian house with sea views, overlooking Sandyhills bay on the delightful Solway coast. It’s a grand house, beautifully finished, sleeping up to 13 in style and comfort; ideal for group getaways, family gatherings and reunions.
Built around 1890, Craigbittern has been lovingly and sympathetically renovated. It now offers luxury holiday accommodation with many striking period features, such as fireplaces, cornicing and shutters, retained. The interiors are outstanding and the décor, furnishings and fittings reflect the grand nature and history of this imposing house.
Stylish and upmarket interiors
Enjoy the delights of country-house living – the stylish and upmarket interiors make this somewhere really special to stay. It would be a fantastic place for a special birthday or significant family gathering. It’s also is a handy base for exploring the many local attractions in Dumfries and Galloway, including the lovely coastline and coastal path. There’s direct route to the sandy beach, just opposite the gates of the drive.
This large house boasts its own annexe, formerly the Coach House, now converted to a delightful cottage. It’s on two levels and is well equipped with two bedrooms, a lounge and small kitchen. The cottage has a more contemporary and cosy feel compared to the traditional and elegant feel of the main house. Many of the rooms of house and cottage have stunning views over the Solway Firth.
Striking antler chandeliers and a magnificent staircase
On entering the Craigbittern House, the large entrance hall has striking antler chandeliers and a magnificent staircase. The main lounge is a grand room with great views over the garden and out to sea. There is a turret in this part of the house which makes charming alcove area, with desk and loads of information on things to see and do in the area.This large room has a comfy sofas, an open fire, large TV with Netflix, DVD player and Bluetooth stereo speakers – the perfect place to relax. There’s another smaller lounge at the front of the house with sofas and woodburner, ideal if you want to escape from the TV and Netflix flicking. This is the place to relax with a good book by the fire. There is free WIFI throughout the house.
traditional period features and charm
There is an exceptional dining room with huge table, feature chandeliers and another open fire. This would be ideal for celebratory meals in a grand setting. The kitchen is a good sized room with large dining table, Rayburn, Stoves electric range style cooker, coffee machine and microwave. It’s really well-equipped and ideal for preparing meals for large groups. Next to the kitchen is a utility room, with fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washer/dryer. The owners seem to have thought of everything and have included a very generous welcome pack with local bread, butter, eggs, jam, chutney, Borders biscuits. And dogs get a tin of treats too!
At the rear of the kitchen is a secret staircase which takes you up to the Den! This is a fantastic hideaway room (maybe the housekeeper’s bedroom in days gone by). There are comfy beanbags and a brand new Xbox One and Wii; ideal for keeping the teens entertained.
Upstairs, via the elegant staircase, are five good sized bedrooms with delightful décor, soft furnishings and very comfy beds! There are rooms with double and king-size beds, and a room with a single bed. Two of the bedrooms are en-suite, one with a lovely roll-top Jacuzzi bath, the other with shower. There is also a separate bathroom with a bath and toilet, and another with shower cubicle.
To the rear of the house is a large, separate games room with table tennis, darts, table football and even a fridge for beers! There is also a large enclosed garden area, with garden furniture, croquet, fire pit and barbecue. There’s everything you need for a lovely summer holiday outdoors.
Craigbittern House is a really special place, packed with traditional period features and charm. It’s the ideal location for a gatherings of friends and family and makes a superb base for exploring the many delights of the Galloway coast.
Perfect Days
Craigbittern is a great base for exploring the breath-taking coastline. You can take a superb walk from just outside the house via Sandyhills Bay to the delightful seaside village of Rockcliffe. There’s wonderful scenery, with cliffs, sandy beaches and views to Rough Island. Don’t forget your binoculars!
With a mild climate and fertile soil, the area is home to some superb gardens. Take a trip to the wonderful Threave Gardens (National Trust) at Castle Douglas. The gardens offer spectacular colour all year round, but autumn is a particularly good time to visit. A bit further away is Logan Botanic Gardens, well worth exploring, with a wide selection of plants from the Southern Hemisphere and an amazing fishpond.
Just chill out in the garden, with alfresco cooking and dining or enjoy a picnic on the beach just 5 minutes’ walk from the house. You can pick up supplies from the village shop at Colvend.
Explore the charming village of Kippford, it’s only a short drive along the coast and has a couple of good pubs on the waterfront.
Go for a drive to along the coast and enjoy lunch in Kirkcudbright – fantastic fish and chips or, something different like scallops and chips, at Polarbites, an award-winning seafood eatery and local institution (bring your own bottle).
Foodies will also enjoy a trip to Castle Douglas, Scotland’s only dedicated food town. It offers a fabulous selection of local food, drink and confectionary.
If you like history, then Dumfries and Galloway is the place to explore. Threave Castle, Drumlanrig Castle and the unmissable Caerlaverock Castle, with its moat and twin towered gatehouse, are brilliant day trips.
Take a trip to the Galloway Forest Park, home to the first Dark Sky Park in the UK, where its claimed you can spot over 7,0000 stars and the Milky Way, all without a telescope.
