Braemar – the heart of the Cairngorms
Braemar is in the heart of the Cairngorms, surrounded by high mountains. It’s famous for its Highland Games every September, which enjoy Royal patronage, and is close to Balmoral and Royal Deeside. One of the biggest draws to the area is the superb walking, covering every possibility from big days on the high peaks of the Cairngorms to gentle riverside rambles through pine forests.
Linn of Dee
One of the highlights is the Linn of Dee, six miles west of Braemar, where you can picnic by the dramatic gorge or enjoy a walk along Glen Lui to the abandoned Derry Lodge (10 km; 3 hours). This route offers fine views of the Cairngorm landscape of ancient pine trees and high peaks, and is also the starting point for one of Scotland’s finest treks, The Lairig Ghru.
This remote pass follows an ancient drovers’ route through the heart of the Cairngorms to Strathspey and Aviemore (32 km; 12 hours).
The area is packed with interesting wildlife; look out for red squirrels, red deer, black grouse, capercaillie, Scottish crossbill and numerous birds of prey.
Balmoral Castle
Braemar also offers easy access to the village of Ballater, where Queen Victoria arrived in Deeside by train and spend time at the nearby Balmoral Castle, the Royal Family’s summer residence.
You can visit the exhibition at the restored station and café or Balmoral Castle where there is pony-trekking and a number of superb walks though the nearby forest. Watch out, you never know who you might come across!
