The Byre (Ardnamurchan)
The Byre in Kilchoan is a peaceful holiday house with warmth and character in a great location for exploring the Ardnamurchan Peninsula. Ideal for couples wanting to escape to the wild west, its close to remote sandy beaches and the famous Ardnamurchan Lighthouse on Scotland’s dramatic west coast.
With the tweet and flutter of birds busying away in the surrounding garden, The Byre provides a wonderful space for couples to relax outdoors in the lush green or melt in to the comfort of the homely interior. The Byre is is attached to a traditional farm building, stable, hayloft, cart shed built around 1886. Next door is the owner’s gallery. Its a perfect base to discover all that this remote and beautiful corner of Scotland has to offer.
A spiral staircase to help you unwind!
Through the quiet garden you enter the house and immediately in to the kitchen. With everything you need for two at hand and a view back out to the garden from the kitchen table, this is a lovely place to dine and plan your days. From the kitchen you then enter the living room, snug with wood and peat burning stove, comfortable seating to lounge upon and a good selection of entertainment and WIFI if the weather isn’t behaving!
There is a really well-equipped kitchen with gas oven, microwave, slow cooker (perfect for stews after a day out exploring) toaster, fridge freezer and cafetiere. There is also a washing machine, which comes in very handy. There is a surprisingly well stocked local shop in the village so self-catering is easy.
You can’t miss the spiral staircase leading up to the cosy, garden facing bedroom, a wonderful feature, cast iron with creative leather detail crafted by the owners. The cute attic bedroom has a really comfy king-size bed and I enjoyed the best sleep in ages.
Peaceful holiday house with warmth and character
There are little bits of artwork and more homemade leather detail around the place which adds a joyful creative quirk, but the most marvellous thing for me was the sea mural in the bathroom and huge green bath to sink in to and relax after a day’s walking.
The Byre has a cosy cottage ambiance, is wonderfully comfortable for two and a great location for an adventurous or inquisitive couple holidaying in the stunning wild beauty of Ardnamurchan and all hosted by a warm and welcoming couple, Jacqui and John.
Perfect Days
To the ends of the earth (well the mainland!)
Ardnamurchan Lighthouse is only a short drive away with numerous sandy coves to check out down meandering heather bordered roads as you go. You can enjoy a tour of the lighthouse in the summer months and even enjoy some lunch in the café.
A day or half day trip to Tobermory is perfect if you want to ditch the car and go on foot, or a short tour of Mull possible if you decide to keep with the wheels. There is a regular ferry across to Tobermory from Kilchoan. There are a few short and interesting walks from the town centre if on your own steam or enjoy a fantastic fresh seafood lunch.
Don’t miss the opportunity to explore some of the local forest walks in the Sunart oak woodland.
Take a walk along coastal path from Portuairk to the famous sands of Sanna Bay. Soak up the incredible views towards Rhum, Eigg, Canna and Isle of Skye
Head for the hills! There are loads of superb hill walks nearby with superb wildlife watching opportunities and a real feeling of wilderness, ask the friendly owners for some top tips.
Just relax at the cottage and have a dram by the fireside or enjoy a glass of something over lunch on the patio
