Two Wester Delfour Cottage

Two Wester Delfour Cottage

At Two Wester Delfour Cottage, Victorian grandeur meets modern luxury on the Alvie Estate, in the heart of the Cairngorms National Park. With a wood-fired hot tub and activities galore, this charming two-bedroom cottage is perfect for an adventure-filled family holiday or a couples’ retreat looking to unwind and enjoy some Highland relaxation. Its also dog friendly which is a real bonus.

Sitting in a wood-fired hot tub, beer in hand star gazing out over the pine forest-clad Monadhliath Mountains, it was hard to imagine I was only ten minutes drive away from the tourist of throng of Aviemore. It really felt a world away.

Victorian grandeur meets modern luxury

Two Wester Delfour Cottage along with its matching neighbour next door is situated in the idyllic Alvie Estate set among roaming deer and rolling hills. The house blends Victorian charm with modern luxury, the first thing you notice on entering is the low ceilings and exposed wooden beams, I was half expecting to enter a candlelit hunting lodge. However, while the deer are still here the cottage today is a little more comfortable than it was for its original owners. Forget Grassic Gibbons’s depiction of rural life and think countryside bliss. A soft colour palette spreads across wallpaper and paint giving the historic cottage a lighter interior that counterbalances the antiques and a reclaimed wooden door to give the place a more contemporary feel.

The artwork displayed around the cottage is also inspired by the local area, adding to the house’s authentic feel and the family collection of 19th century books dotted around give the place real character. However, the BBQ, firepit and large wood fired hot tub make it firmly a 21st-century holiday destination. Two Wester Delfour Cottage is next door to another beautiful cottage, One Wester Delfour Cottage. Depending on availability, these can be booked together to accommodate up to 8 guests. Ideal for a larger group or family gathering.

Wood-fired hot tub and activities galore

The cosy lounge has a really comfy large sofa, state of the art TV (with the usual streaming delights such as Amazon and Netflix, there are good Wi-Fi speeds) and a charming wood burner, ideal for those darker autumn and winter nights. Exposed beams and stonework demonstrate a careful sympathetic refurbishment with much of the cottages original charm retained.

Next door there is a lovely dining room with a delightful wooden table and chairs and lighting and boasting top of the range décor and finishings. The owners clearly have a keen eye for tasteful high end interior design, and this is reflected throughout the house.

The kitchen is well-equipped with a dishwasher, microwave, coffee machine, induction cooker, large fridge/freezer and fantastic array of cooking equipment. It has a more modern feel than the rest of the house, with a newly built skylight bathing it in a morning glow, there’s no better place to start your day than sipping a coffee from the complimentary Lavazza machine. We loved the generous welcome pack too with home-made jam, tasty nibbles, coffee and the most delicious chocolate.

Stylish bathroom and two tranquil bedrooms

Upstairs is a stylish bathroom and two tranquil bedrooms with light and airy décor complete with panoramic views over the Cairngorms. One double and a twin, with exceptionally comfy beds guarantee a good night’s sleep.

Outside there’s an enclosed garden (ideal if you have a dog) and courtyard area with a large wooden table and benches. Set in a natural sun trap with the large 4-person wood fired hot tub this is a fantastic outdoor space. We enjoyed a tasty BBQ with meat from the local butchers in the evening sunshine, before relaxing in the hot tub.

The utility outbuilding has a tumble dryer and washing machine, which is really useful if you are staying for the week.
